After an unusually warm stretch, cooler weather is set to return to Georgia as the New Year begins, according to local forecasts. The Georgia Sun reports that temperatures across much of the state have been running well above normal, with some areas seeing highs 15 to 20 degrees higher than average heading into the weekend. That warmth is expected to break as a strong cold front moves through the state early next week.
According to The Georgia Sun, the front is expected to arrive late Sunday into Monday, bringing a sharp temperature drop behind it. While rain chances remain limited, the bigger impact will be the sudden shift to colder air that settles in for several days.
In coastal and southeast Georgia, WJCL meteorologists say the front should pass through late Monday morning into the early afternoon. After it moves out, temperatures are expected to fall quickly, with overnight lows dropping into the 30s by Tuesday morning. With brisk northwest winds, it could feel even colder, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.
WJCL forecasts daytime highs in southeast Georgia and the Lowcountry to remain in the low to mid-50s for much of the week, marking a noticeable contrast from the recent warmth. New Year’s Eve is expected to be one of the coldest periods, with inland areas potentially seeing temperatures dip into the upper 20s overnight.
Forecasters say the cooler pattern is expected to stick around through the first week of the new year. While the shift won’t bring widespread rain or winter weather, residents are encouraged to prepare for colder mornings, protect plants and pets, and plan accordingly for outdoor activities as Georgia settles back into more typical winter conditions.
