A Georgia House candidate has been arrested on charges of felony child molestation and misdemeanor public indecency.
Andre Lamar Stafford is running on the Republican ticket to represent House District 42. He is accused of exposing himself to a child who was walking to a bus stop in Smyrna.
The warrant for his arrest alleges that a man in a gray sedan pulled up beside the child on Oct. 15. The man told her she was pretty, exposed himself and touched himself. Then, the driver left the area.
After reviewing license plate camera footage, investigators identified a gray Kia Forte registered to Stafford as the possible vehicle involved. The child identified Stafford in a photo lineup with his driver’s license photo as the driver, according to the warrant.
The warrant was issued Oct. 22 and Stafford’s bond was denied. However, Cobb County Detention Center records show that he was later released.
Fox 5 reports that Stafford maintains his innocence and plans to remain in the political race.
Stafford is running against Democrat incumbent Gabriel Sanchez for the seat in the state House.
