Federal judge halts Trump administration’s voter investigations in Georgia

A federal judge in California has ordered the Trump administration to stop investigations into noncitizens being registered to vote in Georgia and eight other states, according to the Associated Press.

The judge halted the investigation until after Election Day, Nov. 3, because she said the government is relying on data full of errors and intimidating groups performing voter assistance efforts.

The ruling applies to investigations in Georgia, California, Connecticut, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wisconsin.

The decision came just one month after the Georgia Secretary of State’s office announced it assisted federal law enforcement to investigate and prosecute alleged violations of federal election law.

In that instance, a federal prosecutor charged three people of illegally voting in federal elections.

In response to the judge’s decision last week, the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying that it is focused on deporting people who aren’t citizens and have cast a ballot in a federal election and that they have no plans to question anyone they believe to be a U.S. citizen.
