Atlanta’s Junior Hawks wheelchair basketball team prepares for new season
The BlazeSports Junior Hawks wheelchair basketball team is preparing for their upcoming season in Atlanta.
The program allows young athletes with physical disabilities to compete in the sport, and the team plays against opponents from across the country.
Coach Jason Joines became involved in the program through his son, Joshua.
“My son was born with spina bifida and started playing for BlazeSports when he was 13,” Joines said. “At first, I was just a parent watching.”
His son went on to join the Division I wheelchair basketball program at the University of Illinois.
“The thing that keeps bringing me back is how important this organization is to helping these kids become fully independent members of society,” he said.
The Junior Hawks’ season begins in October. Registration is open on the team’s website, and their next practice is Sept. 19.
