Nearly 130,000 people came out to vote for the 14th Congressional District special election to choose who will replace former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene until 2027.
Trump-endorsed Republican Clay Fuller won the race against Democrat Shawn Harris with nearly 56% of the vote.
That is a somewhat narrower margin than Greene won the district in 2024. Greene also faced Harris and won with 64% of the vote. In the 2024 election that included the presidential election, more than double the amount of people cast a ballot.
Atlanta News First covered the watch parties for the two candidates. Fuller claimed his victory with a promise.
“I’m going to go and fight for you, and just like President Trump said, I will never let you down,” Fuller said.
Harris acknowledged the defeat while looking to the next election in November. Harris is the only Democrat qualified to run for the race in November.
“We’re going to learn from it. We’re going to get better, and then come November, our ground game will be even better, and we will win this election in November,” Harris said.
Fuller will need to win the primary election May 19 to face off against Harris again in the general election in November. He faces nine other candidates in the crowded primary.
Three other special elections took place on Tuesday. For state Senate District 53, Republican Lanny Thomas won with nearly 69% of the vote.
Democrat Venola Mason defeated Democrat Kelly Kautz for state House District 94, and Democrat Sheila Nelson won with the widest margin with nearly 71% of the vote for state House District 130.
