Gov. Brian Kemp signed a 60-day state gas tax suspension Friday to reduce costs at the pump as prices rise due to the war in Iran.
The move will save Georgians around 33 cents per gallon of gasoline and 37 cents per gallon of diesel. The suspension goes into effect immediately.
“Hardworking Georgians know best how to spend their money, not the government,” Kemp said in a news release. “That’s why I’m proud to sign these bills and, along with the General Assembly, deliver meaningful tax relief on top of the other measures we’ve taken in recent years. Because we budget conservatively, we can take steps like these that actually deliver on affordability issues for families in our state.”
Kemp also signed House Bill 1000, which is a one-time special income tax rebate. The bill authorizes a rebate of $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of household and $500 for married couples filing jointly.
The Governor’s Office claims to have saved Georgians more than $11.8 billion in tax rebates, rate reductions, and the suspension of the gas tax.
“Today’s suspension of the state gas tax enabled by House Bill 1199 will save hardworking Georgians and the truckers who keep our state moving nearly $400 million over the next 60 days,” said Speaker Jon Burns, in the news release.
