Georgia ACA open enrollment begins Nov. 1. Here’s what you need to know.

The open enrollment period for Affordable Care Act coverage opens Nov. 1, and Georgians will have several plans to compare.

Deanna Williams is an enrollment assister for the group Georgians for a Healthy Future. She said people often make the mistake of only considering the premium costs.

“A lot of mistakes I come across, is some people will choose the plan that’s the cheapest for them but they end up spending the most in the long run throughout the year trying to utilize their health insurance,” Williams said. “I definitely want them to pay attention beyond just that monthly premium and that first staple cost that shows up.”

Georgia Access offers free, unbiased help through certified assisters. Williams said people can find help by searching their ZIP code or an organization name on the state’s website or call the contact center. Williams also recommended people to review their plans instead of letting it auto-renew.

Open enrollment lasts until Jan. 15, but those who want coverage starting Jan. 1 need to sign up by Dec. 15.

Dr. Rhonda Randall is the chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare Employer and Individual. She said there is a list of costs people should consider.

“You want to ask yourself, what am I going to be responsible for paying beyond that monthly premium? And I’m talking about out-of-pocket costs like co-pays, coinsurance, deductibles. Make sure that you’re considering and understanding what all of those numbers mean,” Randall urged.

Randall said people should also consider if their health needs have changed before choosing a plan.
