Federal inspections show that Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Georgia have improved since last year, according to WABE.
People detained at the facilities, advocates and lawmakers have continued to raise concerns about medical care and living conditions in the facilities.
Georgia’s ICE detention facilities include Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Robert A Deyton Facility in Lovejoy, and the two immigration facilities at the Folkston ICE Processing Center in Folkston.
René Kladzyk is a senior investigator with the nonprofit Project on Government Oversight (POGO). She told WABE that the issue is transparency.
“There’s very few actors that have access to these facilities,” she said. “There’s not a lot of transparency and access to information about conditions of detention.”
POGO conducted an analysis of ICE detention inspection reports and found that violations dropped by nearly 70% between fiscal year 2022 and 2025. POGO investigators say facilities could be inspected using one of six different sets of standards, and their sources say those standards have been weakened.
