Truths About War
Opposition to data center development in Muscogee County continued to build over the weekend as residents gathered in downtown Columbus to protest proposed projects and urge local leaders to halt future approvals.
The rally, reported by the Ledger-Enquirer, attracted about 100 people and was part of a nationwide day of action against the rapid expansion of data centers. Organizers called for a moratorium on new projects, arguing the public has not been given enough input into decisions that could reshape the community.
Much of the criticism centered on the Columbus Council’s recent approval of a technology overlay district, which establishes zoning regulations for future data centers in Muscogee County. Opponents said they spent months attending public meetings, researching the issue and submitting petitions, but believe the council approved the ordinance despite widespread community opposition.
Speakers at the rally said they were frustrated by what they described as a lack of transparency throughout the process. Some questioned how the final version of the ordinance was developed and argued residents were excluded from key decisions before the council vote.
Participants also raised concerns about the long-term impacts of large-scale data centers, including increased demand for electricity and water, higher utility costs, industrial noise and the environmental footprint of the facilities. Others challenged claims that the projects would create significant local employment, noting that many technical jobs associated with modern data centers can be performed remotely.
The event drew supporters from Columbus as well as neighboring communities, with attendees saying the issue extends beyond a single project and reflects broader concerns about artificial intelligence infrastructure and industrial development across Georgia.
As data center proposals continue to emerge throughout the state, residents at the rally said they plan to remain engaged and push for greater public involvement before additional projects move forward.
