Mary Ruth Mullins sworn in as Pine Mountain’s first woman mayor

Mary Ruth Mullins was sworn in as the mayor of Pine Mountain, becoming the first woman to become mayor in the town’s history.

“I accept this responsibility with gratitude for those who paved the way before me and determination to serve every resident with fairness, integrity, and heart,” Mullins told WTVM. “Together, we will honor our town’s rich history while working boldly toward a strong, welcoming future for Pine Mountain.”

Judge Ron Mullins, Mary Ruth Mullins’ cousin, administered the swearing in ceremony.

The small town is in east Georgia, north of Columbus, and it is home to nearly 1,300 residents.

Mullins has been active in civil society, serving in multiple positions from leading the Chipley Women’s Club to the board of the Chipley Historical Center.

Mullins told WTVM that her goal is to preserve the small-town character of Pine Mountain while also inspiring development.

Although Mullins said she was proud to make history, she thought the message her win sends to children is more important.

“I think it’s good for kids to see that being mayor is not limited and anybody can do whatever they want to do,” she said.

Francis “Frankie” Mabry and Stokeley Pounds were also sworn in as town council members at the ceremony.
