Kennesaw State earns international recognition for Supplemental Instruction program

Kennesaw State University received international recognition for its Supplemental Instruction (SI) program.

The program earned accreditation from the International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) making it the largest program in the U.S. with that designation, according to the news release.

“This milestone affirms that our SI team has built a program that not only meets but exceeds international standards for supplemental instruction,” said Mandy McGrew, KSU’s director of supplemental instruction, in the news release. “We look forward to seeing the impact it will have on KSU students for years to come.”

The program offers free weekly study sessions led by trained peer instructors to improve learning strategies and reinforce class materials for students enrolled in specific courses, according to the news release.

The study sessions are held on campus and online 60 to 80 times per day, and in 2025, the program helped around 3,400 students.

“We try to be holistic and support our students in a way that goes beyond, ‘How do I solve this math problem?’” McGrew said. “We have found that students who come to at least one SI session in a semester are finishing their classes an entire letter grade higher than their peers who are not coming to any SI sessions, so we do see the correlation that students who are attending are doing better in their classes.”
