High school friends rally to support Georgia student wounded in Brown shooting

A group of high school best friends have banded together to support their friend, who was a victim in the Brown University shooting.

The Dec. 13 shooting at the Rhode Island school resulted in the death of two students and injured nine others. The police continue to search for the unidentified killer, according to the New York Times.

Jacob Spears, 18, was one of the victims of the shooting, suffering a gunshot wound to his stomach  during his final exam in economics. His high school best friends started a GoFundMe to help support him and his family, according to the GoFundMe page.

The account has received around 2,000 donations of more than $90,000. The money raised will help Spears and his family cover travel expenses and assist in his recovery.

The GoFundMe page identified Spears as a graduate of Evans High School, outside of Augusta, Georgia, and the only student from his class to attend an Ivy League school. Spears is a computer science major with a minor in economics and enjoys piano and trying new foods, according to the page.

“We are asking people to place Jacob, his family, and all those affected by the tragedy at Brown in their prayer groups and chains. If you are able, please consider donating to Jacob and his family to help support them during this horrific event,” read the post. “Your kindness and generosity will make a meaningful difference in their lives as they navigate this difficult time.”
