Casino company secures deal for Macon site despite Georgia ban

Although casino gambling remains illegal in Georgia, that didn’t stop a casino company from securing a deal to purchase a former JCPenney building in Macon.

The Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority approved an agreement last week, which would allow the purchase of the property by Gaming and Leisure Properties, a subsidiary of PENN Entertainment, according to 13 WMAZ.

The company operates 41 casinos and betting facilities across the country. The company now has 10 years to purchase the facility for $20 million and an option to extend for an additional $500,000.

Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller told 13 WMAZ that the deal lies in the hands of lawmakers.

“We’ve always wanted to have a hotel on the site there,” Miller said. “And of course, you know, the state of Georgia has to determine whether or not they’re gonna allow casinos.”

Senate Resolution 131 would amend the Georgia Constitution to allow the state legislature to regulate both sports betting and casino gambling. The resolution would require a two-third majority vote in both chambers and a statewide referendum to pass.

The company plans to demolish the building and make site improvements in the first five-year option period.
