Georgia’s first baby box installed at Henry County fire station
Georgia’s first baby box has been installed at the Henry County Fire Rescue Station No. 6 in Ellenwood, according to GPB News.
A state law passed this year that allows places like hospitals and police and fire stations to install baby boxes for the anonymous surrender of infants.
Henry County Fire Chief Pat Wilson told GPB News that he has never seen a baby surrendered in his 40 years of work, but the baby box ensures the safety and security of the infant when it does happen.
“The baby’s placed in the box, there’s no cameras,” he said. “And at the end of the day, we have opportunity to give that child an opportunity to live.”
There is a camera inside the box to monitor the baby, and emergency responders have five minutes to get to the baby box after they are notified it is opened.
Georgia’s Safe Haven law provides immunity to a person surrendering a child that’s no older than about 6 weeks.
Henry County plans to install four more boxes if they are able to raise the funds.
