Gov. Brian Kemp has suspended all seven members of the Dublin City Board of Education due to a multimillion-dollar financial crisis.
Kemp signed an executive order Monday suspending Amanda Smith, John Bell, Jeff Davis, Joanna Glover, Peggy Johnson, James Lanier and Kenny Walters while also creating a committee to recommend temporary replacements of the board.
The Georgia Board of Education voted unanimously on Aug. 12 to suspend all members of the board. The hearing at the state board was triggered after the district reported it was one step away from losing its accreditation.
The district faces a $20 million deficit which surfaced when the district failed to pay $6 million to the state health insurance plan, according to 13 WMAZ.
The crisis forced the district to eliminate programs and cut 46 jobs. Superintendent Fred Williams and Finance Director Chad McDaniel have since left the district.
The district serves around 2,300 students.
The executive order does not set a deadline for new board members to be named, so it is unclear when they will start work. The suspended members can seek reinstatement between 30 to 60 days after the order, but after that, their removal is permanent.
